TreePeople invites families, nature lovers, and Halloween fans alike to our Milkweed Monarch Mash—a festive and educational event celebrating the iconic western monarch butterfly and its favorite food: milkweed!
WHY:
The western monarch population is in trouble. In recent years, the number of monarchs migrating to California during the butterflies’ annual fall migration has dropped by about 95 percent. This decline is partly due to habitat loss, specifically a decrease in the number of native milkweed plants.
Milkweed helps guide monarchs on their migratory journey, and is the only food their caterpillars can eat. One of the most important things we can do to increase monarch populations is to grow more native milkweed throughout our region. That’s why this weekend, we’re asking volunteers to join us for our biggest milkweed planting event at Castaic Lake! In addition to planting thousands of native milkweed plants that will create habitat for monarchs and other pollinators to thrive, this special Halloween-themed event will include a pollinator costume contest, plant giveaways, and other fun and educational events for the whole family!
With monarch populations on the decline, this event is part of TreePeople’s ongoing mission to plant 6,000 native milkweeds to restore native habitat, educate the public, and create real change for pollinators. Plus, it’s a Halloween celebration with a purpose!
